At the ICCR, we have over a decades’ experience with interdisciplinary and transnational social research. Over the years, we have learned that successful interdisciplinary research does not occur spontaneously or quickly (let alone smoothly). Interdisciplinarity certainly does not jump to life just because it is part of a research programme. Rather, interdisciplinary and international social research is a fragile process always teetering on the brink of failure. Success requires a lot of patience, a bit of luck and, most importantly, space for encounter and experimentation. Just the sorts of things, then, an increasingly competitive research environment is unable to provide

The ICCR-Agora is such a space for encounter. Running from October to July each year, the ICCR-Agora features at least one event a month. These events vary in form and content. They can be presentations, lecture series, workshops or discussions about any aspect of policy-making and governance in Europe. However, all events in the ICCR-Agora have in common the aim to promote dialogue across different boundaries and interfaces. The ICCR-Agora is a place for getting to know other policy issues as well as ways of understanding and dealing with these problems. The ICCR-Agora is a place to discover and explore synergies between different fields of policy-making and research. It provides the opportunity for identifying borders (between the disciplines, between the issue areas, between theories, between countries) and then crossing them. Most importantly, however the ICCR-Agora allows us to do all these things without any of the usual pressures involved in interdisciplinary research.
